SECTION 3.

No. 1.

Mr. Max Müller to Sir Edward Grey.--(Received April 30.)

(No. 91.) (Telegraphic.) P.

CHANGSHA.

Peking, April 30, 1910.

With reference to my immediately preceding telegram of the 28th instant, His Majesty's consul-general at Hankow telegraphs as follows:--

"Following is reply received from His Majesty's consul at Changsha :-

-

"At present all is tranquil, but I expect there will be trouble when the question is raised regarding the apportionment of responsibility for the riots.

"In accordance with instructions I addressed a written notification to the governor, and have now received his written reply undertaking to protect British subjects at Yochow and Changsha. He further requests me to telegraph to you in this sense.

I have consequently informed British subjects that they are now free to return to their houses in Changsha city."
